My Home Town
The community name was based on a nearby lake which in turn was named after Winnifred Kirkland, a secretary of the Ontario Department of Mines in Toronto.
The lake was named by surveyor Louis Rorke in 1907. Miss Kirkland never visited the town and the lake that bore her name no longer exists because of mine tailings.
The community comprises Kirkland Lake, as well as Swastika, Chaput Hughes and Harvey Kirkland. Kirkland Lake was built on gold, but it is equally as well known for producing world-famous hockey players. Indeed, legendary hockey broadcaster Foster Hewitt called Kirkland Lake "the town that made the NHL famous", likely because in the early days of the NHL, it was not uncommon to find an NHLer from the town.
The town celebrates this tradition at the Hockey Heritage North museum.
The Webash Wailer
"The Webash Wailer" has been written for everyone who appreciates "the bush", including those who enjoy humor, friendship and love of life.
World Thoughts - Northern Style
This book - World Thoughts ~ Northern Style is for people who like outdoor poems, romance, humor and a bit of a mixture of world thoughts thrown in.
The cover and title speak for themselves, as the thoughts are varied, and in no order of direction. They are scattered thoughts from forty years ago to the present day.
:: WELCOME:: to my 'Little Place on the 'Net'
The main reason that this website exists is to establish a venue for sharing some poetry, short stories and information about outdoor activities that abound here in North Eastern Ontario, Canada.
In 1992, there was an industrial accident that resulted in my back, neck and right shoulder being injured from approximately six hundred pounds of logs falling on me. This was a logging mill accident and there was a fourteen year battle with my employer and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (W.S.I.B.). At first the company that I worked for tried to blame me for the accident, but eventually the truth came out and it was decided that the fault was due to company error in their safety practice's and training methods.
All those years that my family should have received compensation for me being injured and partially disabled were not paid and some how we survived. Now the fight is over; I receive some benefits but was screwed out of those monies of fourteen years wages. Needless to say it was a long and tough time period but my family is my corner stone and we will get through the bitterness of our loss. I have taken up writing as one of my hobbies and also to try and sell books that I have written.
My wife and I raise our grandson and we have two each of dogs and cats. The Webash Wailer is an outdoors book about incidents (mostly hilarious ones) that happen out at our camp in the bush near Kirkland Lake where I live. The poetry book is about different events and some of the poems go back thirty years to the time they were first written. As I grow older and hopefully wiser, the theme of the poetry has changed somewhat and again hopefully, the poetry has changed for the better as well. In the bitter cold winter months of our northeastern climate, I find the time long; so that's when I do most of my writings.
When late February and March finally come around and the weather is much nicer, it is time to allow one to enjoy some ice fishing. This indeed helps to break up the length of winter time doldrums.
All of spring, summer and fall, I fish and hunt and enjoy the outdoors. Some of my time is spent working in my garage on projects involving anything from carpentry, auto mechanics, painting and of course repair work to my old home (fourteen years with out money to fix anything, builds up a lot of repairs to be accomplished).
Photography is becoming a hobby as well. On this site, there will be short stories from time to time and a poem or two. Pictures will also be changed when I find the time to take them and take care that they are of good taste. Please feel free to write a comment in my guest book if you are inclined to do so.
In 2006, May 14th., it was Mothers Day and I had a heart transplant. There was a virus in my heart that was slowly killing me, but I am doing great in that department and have renewed energy to enjoy life and the great outdoors, especially with the people who are my companions in hunting and fishing adventures. I take huge amounts of medications; mainly anti rejection pills to stay healthy. Lot's of exercise by hunting and fishing help out in my health department in the care of my new heart.
Up here in the northeastern part of Ontario we enjoy all the seasons and life is a little laid back compared to city living. There are parts of the bush that rarely see human interaction and it is a calming , relaxing place to get away from it all. Life is too short to not be happy doing what one wants to accomplish. Personally, I enjoy outdoors over most of my hobbies but just keeping busy and living life to the fullest with my new gift of a heart and better out look on life, it gives me a happiness that can't be bought.
Kirkland Lake and area is one of the most beautiful places to live and play in. Come and visit the area and you will fall in love with the scenery and the slowed down pace to leading a quality life of adventure, happiness, excitement and fun, even if it is only for a short visit or relocating to settle down in our neck of the woods.
A new outdoors book is almost completed and a second poetry book is in my plans as well. This winter, I should be quite busy finishing up these projects but right now I am too busy hunting and fishing. See you outdoors, it's the greatest place to be. Hope you enjoy this site.
